Safe: 1. free from harm or safe. 2. affording safety, secure from danger or loss. 3. reliable The
Meriam-Webster Dictionary.
This is a tough one to write about, because people get offensive about this. Mostly do to pride, the number
one reason people don't reach their full potential and they never make it to that complete balanced horseman.
Many times I am asked to ride someones horse for them, and I tell them that it's not a safe horse to ride. And
they don't understand it, because they have been riding him. But I want you to imagine if you saw me doing
something like saddle soaping my saddle or something. And while I am doing it my body is going through the
motions but my head is up and my eyes are wide open looking all around. You would think I was crazy. If it
were your child you would seek professional help for them. Yet, it doesn't bother people to be on the back of
horses like that. That to me is not safe.
Now a horse doesn't have to be completely emotionally collected for me to get on him, or I would never be
able to get them to that point. But, their are a few criteria I must have. One I have to be able to handle the
horse anywhere on his body without it bothering him and be able to handle him without him being tied or
confined, even feet and saddling. He must not have any brace against me. If he braces against me on the
ground it is in his mind and he will brace against me on his back. Also I must be able to ride him in a
hackamore, or I will work it on the ground until I can. Without being able to do all of this I don't believe he is
safe or I have earned the right to ride him. It is all about your relationship with him.
Versatile: turning with ease from one thing or position to another; having many aptitudes. The
Meriam-Webster Dictionary
Have you ever wondered why some top athletes like Michael Jordan or Bo Jackson chose to try another sport.
Or why a lot of them choose to play golf on the weekends or some other activity rather then their sport. Now
imagine if Michael Jordan was kept in a 12' by 12' cell and only let out to practice or participate in his sport. Do
you think he would have really given his all to it. But, this is what you see a lot. Horses kept in a stall with the
only human contact is feeding, being ridden and training for their sport. Don't you think the horse would get
bored with it, too. Now lets say that it really doesn't effect his performance and he is just as good one way or
the other. Do you really think it is whats best for the horse? Its a judgement call. But, I don't. I believe instead
of training a horse for a sport or an event. Take the horse all the way to a complete safe, versatile, partner.
Once there find you a sport or event you want to partake, and add extra practice in on that. That's why you will
never see me at a futurity. In my opinion it is not what's best for the horse.
Partner: 1: associate or colleague 2: one or two persons contractually associated as joint principals. 3:
Spouse. The Meriam-Webster Dictionary.
Not much can be expanded on this. But, it is when the two truly are feeling of each other. But, the human has
the responsibility of getting them there from teaching instead of constant controlling. Physical punishment of
any kind is not going to get you there. That is too predator like.

This is a safe horse. Note the relaxed head the soft eyes. The lack of a need to
have control of the horse with a bit in its mouth. This is only after about 3 weeks of
its first time under saddle. And because of the extensive prior ground work and
relationship building could have been 3 days after her first time under saddle.
